Since the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union in 2021, research peptide shipments between EU member states and the UK travel as international consignments rather than intra-community movements. This article describes the documentation, classification and labelling that we use to keep clearance times short and predictable.

Movement category

Research peptides shipped from our EU facility to a UK consignee move under the standard international parcel regime:

  • Origin paperwork: commercial invoice with full product description, CAS number where applicable, net peptide mass per vial, total mass, sequence reference, value, and the line “For research use only — not for human or veterinary consumption.”
  • HS classification: typically 2937.x (hormones, prostaglandins and their derivatives) for peptide hormones, 2933.x for non-hormone heterocyclic peptides, and 2934.x for nucleic-acid-related compounds. The exact 8- or 10-digit code depends on the peptide and is shown on the commercial invoice.
  • Incoterms: DAP (Delivered At Place) by default. UK import VAT and any duty are payable by the consignee on delivery unless an alternative incoterm is agreed.

Documentation in every shipment

Each box leaves the facility with:

  1. The commercial invoice (paper + electronic).
  2. A printed packing list matching the invoice.
  3. The lot-specific COA(s) for every vial in the box.
  4. A safety data sheet (SDS) for each line item.
  5. Cold-chain indicator strips where the route requires them.

This combination is sufficient for HMRC clearance in the overwhelming majority of consignments.

Controlled substances

A small number of research peptides are scheduled in the UK and require additional licensing before they can be supplied to a UK consignee. We will refuse a UK order silently routed through the standard checkout for any scheduled compound and will contact the customer to arrange the correct paperwork. If you are unsure whether a compound is scheduled in the UK, contact technical support before placing the order.

VAT and duty

For UK consignees:

  • VAT is payable on import at the prevailing rate. Where the consignee has a UK VAT registration and a valid EORI number, we can prepare paperwork for postponed VAT accounting.
  • Duty is generally 0% on substances classified under 2937.x and 2933.x, but the carrier’s broker is the authoritative source on the specific consignment.

For non-UK / non-EU consignees, duty and tax are calculated by the destination’s customs authority.

Transit time

Typical end-to-end transit, EU lab to UK consignee:

  • Order placed before 13:00 CET, working day: picked, QC-checked and dispatched same day.
  • Standard tracked airmail: 2–4 working days door-to-door.
  • Express courier: 1–2 working days door-to-door.
  • HMRC clearance: typically same day on arrival; up to 24 hours when documentation requires manual review.

Cold-chain shipments use dry ice with a 72-hour temperature reserve to absorb clearance variability.

Receiving guidance for UK labs

  1. Inspect the box on arrival. Photograph any external damage before opening.
  2. Confirm the lot number on each vial against the COAs in the shipment.
  3. Place the vials in −20 °C storage promptly.
  4. Retain the commercial invoice and the COAs together — both will be requested by your institution’s procurement and EHS teams in the event of an audit.
